Plated vs. Buffet Dinner: Which is Right for Your Event?

Branches Events |

One of the most common catering questions we hear is 'should we do plated or buffet?' Both have their place, and the right choice depends on your event style, budget, and priorities. Here's an honest comparison to help you decide.

Plated Dinner: The Classic Choice

Plated service means each guest receives an individually prepared plate, served course by course. It's the traditional choice for formal weddings and upscale events.

Pros:

  • Elegant and formal presentation
  • Controlled portions — less food waste
  • Guests stay seated, creating a relaxed pace
  • Easier to manage for larger weddings (no lines)
  • Chef can plate each dish beautifully

Cons:

  • Requires advance menu selection from guests (adds admin)
  • Less variety — guests choose one entrée
  • Can feel rigid for casual events
  • Typically costs slightly more due to service requirements

Buffet Dinner: Crowd-Pleasing Flexibility

Buffet service offers multiple dishes laid out for guests to serve themselves. It's popular for events where variety and a relaxed vibe matter.

Pros:

  • More variety — something for everyone
  • Guests control their portions and preferences
  • No need to collect entrée choices in advance
  • Works well for diverse dietary needs
  • Creates movement and mingling opportunities
  • Often slightly lower cost than plated

Cons:

  • Lines can form if not managed well
  • Food can look picked-over toward the end
  • More food is prepared, which can mean more waste
  • Feels less formal than plated service

The Cost Question

Many couples assume buffet is cheaper. That's not always true. Buffets require more food (to keep dishes looking full) and more equipment (chafing dishes, carving stations). Plated dinners require more servers but less food.

At most venues, the price difference is $5-15 per person. Choose based on style and guest experience, not just cost. If you're on a tight budget, ask your venue which option they recommend for value. See our plated dinner menus and buffet options for examples.

Which Events Suit Each Style?

Plated works well for:

  • Formal weddings
  • Milestone anniversaries (50th, etc.)
  • Corporate awards dinners
  • Events where guests are older or less mobile
  • Smaller guest counts (under 100)

Buffet works well for:

  • Casual or semi-formal weddings
  • Sweet 16s and proms (teens love options)
  • Family reunions and celebrations
  • Events with diverse dietary needs
  • Brunch events
  • Larger guest counts (100+)

Hybrid Options

You don't have to choose one or the other. Many couples opt for a hybrid approach:

Plated appetizer + buffet dinner: Guests receive an elegant first course, then enjoy a buffet for the main meal. Best of both worlds.

Buffet + action stations: Carving stations, pasta stations, or made-to-order dishes add excitement and chef interaction to a buffet.

Family-style service: Platters placed at each table for guests to pass and share. Feels communal without buffet lines.

Questions to Ask Your Venue

  • What's the price difference between plated and buffet?
  • How do you manage buffet lines to avoid long waits?
  • Can we do a tasting of both styles?
  • How do you handle dietary restrictions with each option?
  • What do you recommend for our guest count?

Our Take

At Branches, we offer both plated and buffet options across our event packages. For weddings over 120 guests, we often recommend buffet — it moves efficiently and guests love the variety. For intimate weddings or formal corporate dinners, plated service creates an elevated experience.

Not sure what's right for your event? Schedule a tasting and try both. Your taste buds will help you decide.
