Choosing a wedding venue is one of the biggest decisions you'll make — and one of the most expensive. Before you sign a contract, make sure you understand exactly what you're getting. These 15 questions will help you compare venues accurately and avoid costly surprises.

Pricing & Packages

1. What's included in the per-person price? This is the most important question. Some venues quote a low base price but charge separately for linens, setup, cake cutting, champagne toast, and service fees. All-inclusive venues bundle everything into one transparent price.

2. Are there separate venue rental fees? Some venues charge a rental fee on top of per-person catering costs. Others include venue rental in the package. Make sure you're comparing apples to apples.

3. What's the service charge and tax? A 20-22% service charge plus NJ sales tax can add significantly to your quoted price. Get the all-in number before you commit.

4. Is there a minimum guest count or food & beverage minimum? Some venues require you to guarantee a minimum spend, regardless of how many guests attend.

5. How many hours do we get? Understand what's included and what overtime costs. Five hours is standard for receptions; some venues include cocktail hour, others don't.

7. Is there a bridal suite? A private space for getting ready, touch-ups, and a moment of calm before walking down the aisle is invaluable.

8. What's the parking situation? Free parking is a perk your guests will appreciate. Ask about capacity and valet options.

Food & Beverage

9. Can we do a tasting? Most quality venues offer tastings for booked couples. This is your chance to experience the food before your wedding day.

10. How do you handle dietary restrictions? Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher — make sure the kitchen can accommodate your guests' needs.

11. What's included in the bar package? Open bar? Top-shelf or well drinks? Wine and beer only? Understand exactly what your guests will be drinking.

Coordination & Support

12. Who coordinates on the day of? Some venues provide a dedicated coordinator who manages the timeline, communicates with vendors, and handles issues. This is worth its weight in gold.

13. Can we bring outside vendors? Photographer, florist, DJ, cake — understand any restrictions or preferred vendor lists.

14. What's your rain plan? If you're planning an outdoor ceremony, know exactly what happens if weather doesn't cooperate.

15. Can I read recent reviews? A venue's reputation speaks volumes. Look for consistent praise around food quality, service, and coordination.
